To paraphrase Gilbert and Sullivan, when everybody is somebody, nobody is anybody. But is it a formula that can apply successfully to the Habs? The Canadiens announced at their annual golf tournament this morning at Laval-sur-le-Lac that they won’t have a captain for the 2014-15 season, instead going with four assistant captains. The assistant captains will be Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Markov, Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban. This won’t mark the first time the Canadiens will go without a captain. The club played the 2009-10 season without a captain after Saku Koivu left Montreal as a free agent and signed with the Anaheim Ducks. Brian Gionta was named captain for the 2010-11 season. Gionta left Montreal this summer as a free agent, signing with the Buffalo Sabres. We asked The Gazette’s Pat Hickey for his take on the announcement and what it meant for those involved.
